How to Write Greeting Card Messages, Wishes, or Sayings

If you want to write your own greeting card saying for your card, there are few steps you can take to ensure your message is a success.

  1. Take into account who you are writing for.  The first step in knowing how to write in a greeting card is knowing who you are writing to.  Ask yourself what likes and dislikes he or she has.  Would this person like a funny message?
  2. Use a list of words that are common for your card.  Brainstorm common words that you know are usually in the type of greeting card wishes that you want to write.  For example, some of the words in a sympathy card might include: Loss, remember, peace, sorrow, strength, sorry, understand, hope, cherish, love, pray
  3. Take your list of greeting card words and put them together for your message.  An example from the word list above might be: "I am sorry for your loss, and I pray that you will have peace and strength through this time of sorrow."
  4. Read through your greeting to make sure it is good.  Sometimes when your first write your message, it will not sound sincere.  Other times it may sound unclear.  One read over can help you get it right.

This is an amazingly thorough list, and what a great topic for an article. It's often nearly impossible to find the right words for a card. Thanks for a great hub!

Blake, funny you should comment on one of my hubs today, considering I was pondering what to write in a card to my neighbor only an hour ago...

Here is the problem; I think their eldest Bernese Mountain Dog died. I have not seen him outside as I head down between our two yards to take Baxter Thor and Finnegan for a walk. Generally, I am hassled by three barking buffoons. Lately, I have only been accosted by two. IF Zeus the Elder has finally succumbed, I would like to express my sympathies, because even as a pup, he had issues with his legs and was not expected to live as long as he did.

But what if I write a sympathy card and he has not passed but is simply confined indoors due to his condition? These are neighbors I never see. I have grown attached to their dogs, but only greet the owners once or twice a month if we happen to cross paths on the way to the mailbox or shoveling up doggie doo doo in our respective back yards.

How would you, the expert card writer, approach this? If I wait to see them, it could be weeks. If I knock on their door to inquire about Zeus, well, that feels awkward. What makes the most sense to you?

Give them a thinking of you sort of card message that says something like the following:

"I know that we don't talk to each other real often but I feel connected to you as neighbors through my interactions with your dogs. There's something special about dogs that their owners understand, and that's something we have in common. I have found myself getting attached to your dogs as often as I get to see them. I hadn't seen Zeus lately and missed him. I just wanted to let you know that I was thinking about him and that I missed seeing him."
