A couple years ago I decided that I wanted to start writing personalized songs for people for fun and possibly as a source of income. I wrote a song for a couple friends' wedding based on an interview I did with them. I recorded it and they ended up dancing their first dance as a couple to that song. This was a fun process for me, but then I stopped.

Somehow between then and now, I have ended up writing less music and writing more hubs. I feel successful in the amount of money my hubs are making, but music is my first love art. I feel a bit like I am cheating on my woman.

My wife even calls the guitar my "other girlfriend." Now I want to get back into writing songs in general. What better way than to open an offering for a free song to the HubPages community, and ultimately the entire internet. My goals for doing this are to:

1. Get me writing and recording music again
2. Help me learn to better write for and about other people

The personalized song industry seems week in that many of the services offered are simple word substitutions to a "template" song. These template personalized songs sound extremely cheesy to me and are full of meaningless cliches. I would imagine anyone else with any musical taste would feel the same.

When I wrote the song for my friends, I didn't include eye color, names, dates, or other easily substituted information. I just wrote a song that I would enjoy listening to myself. Unfortunately there are not many personalized song people offering "from scratch" lyric and music writing that is actually unique. If you find one, prepare to pay around $1,000.00 starting. Let me write and record a custom personalized song for you for free. This can be for any celebration including: birthday, anniversary, wedding, engagement, mother's day, father's day, etc.

The only requirement is that you be able to communicate why the story/person deserves a song, and you have to give me a few weeks to work on it to make it really nice. Here's what you have to do:

1. Either contact me privately (e-mail me from my profile) or in the comments section of this hub

2. Explain why you think it would be cool for me to write a custom song for you or someone you know. In other words, what makes the situation, event, or person special enough for me to spend 20-40 hours producing a song.

3. Tell me your music preferences, so I can at least take your tastes into account, even though I will retain my right as an artist to use musical style that I can personally feel.

4. Tell me when I need to have the song done. A deadline.

5. Agree that you are not hiring me, and you are not paying me anything, but I will do my best to complete your song and deliver it in the time frame you want. And that I will e-mail you an MP3 and/or mail you a CD of the finished product. And that since you are not hiring me, and this is not a work for hire, I retain all copyrights. And I will ask your permission to use the song in any public release/display.

I am not sure how long it will take to decide who's personalized custom song I will write and record, because I don't know how many responses I will have to this hub. Once I find a description/story that I like, I will update this hub with a message at the top announcing my decision.

I will update this hub, or write subsequent hubs updating the writing and recording process. And If enough people are interested, I may invite you to be part of the process. I will definitely want the person I chose to be involved.

• Give as much descriptive data as possible when describing the person, situation, or story. In other words, tell me sights, sounds, tastes, smells, feelings, and thoughts involved. These details allow you to experience the lyrics. So instead of "It was Winter, and I live in Michigan," say, "It was so bitterly cold that my face stung as I walked 12 steps to my car." If you can't understand this, it's o.k., I understand, you're not the songwriter.  Just do your best, since I haven't lived your life.
  
• Think of a main theme you want to get across.  In other words, "My dad sacrificed for us more than he should have when we were growing up."  Then realize that I will want at least two verses, so give me at least two or three examples to elaborate this point.  I will then tie these verses to your major theme, found in the chorus.
• Think about what style of music you think would actually work for the content of the lyrics, not just your favorite.  You can tell me your favorite also if you would like.
  

I received an e-mail from a sincere person asking politely for a song, so I will attempt to produce this song for her occaission for free. I am thankful for her story, and her willingness to let me try writing for her. Anyone else may also contact me if you would like me to write a song, but you should give me a couple months warning now.

I was able to finish the personalized song for Madelaine and Miles. I am happy with it for the most part, and more importantly I am glad that they like it. Madelaine made it easy for me to write her song because she gave such good, detailed information.

I finished another song, and I will post the lyrics once the "event" is over so I don't spoil anything with the off chance that the person will accidentally stumble upon this page.  I am going to start a website where I would like to try this thing as a business.  I would like to start being compensated for writing songs for special people and special occasions.
