How To Make Hubs: Directions for Making Hubs

Hub Making Instructions

If you want to know how to make a hub, this is the hub to explain the directions. This will be my first hub to create itself. I must create this hub in order to create this hub. This will be the step by step hub making for dummies hub. If you want to get rich from writing on HubPages, you will have to follow these instructions. That's only because you have to do these things just to make a hub. The getting rich part is totally up to you.

Sure, HubPages has their own overview for writing hubs, but I took pictures of the entirely insignificant process of creating this hub. This hub includes all the details you need to know even if you haven't used a computer since 1997. I added some smarty pants directions along the way to make sure you are paying attention. These pictures were painstakingly taken as I went through each step. This long and tedious process was meant for you, the dummy, to get all the basics down as easily as possible, because you are a HubPages writing dummy. The first step to the process is realizing you have a problem.

Step One: Create A HubPages Account

If you don't already have an account, then you'll have to sign up prior to making your first hub. It seems obvious, but some people might fool around for hours trying to figure out how to get the option for making hubs without actually having an account. It is a free account and you can sign up for HubPages here.

Create A New HubPages Account

Fill in this info page. If you don't have an e-mail address, then you'll have to go to yahoo.com or another site to get one.
Fill in this info page. If you don't have an e-mail address, then you'll have to go to yahoo.com or another site to get one.

Step Two: Fill In Your Account Information

No, you don't have to fill in your social security info or your bank account info. You can visit my own personal website and input that information. Just kidding. It's as easy as thinking up a username and putting in your e-mail address. Be careful when you choose your username. You can't change it later, so spend the extra 2 seconds it takes to realize that "I'm Awesome" is probably not the best you can come up with. No offense if there is an actual "I'm Awesome" hubber.

You can use your real name if you like, but realize that your HubPages profile may soon be the number one ranking page in google and yahoo. Then you can't do anything you wouldn't want your mom, pastor, or employer to see.

HubPages Entrance Exam

Even if you pass the easy "What's your name and e-mail address" questions. You still might not make the cut when you face this test.
Even if you pass the easy "What's your name and e-mail address" questions. You still might not make the cut when you face this test.

Step Three: Fill In The Code At The Bottom

This is the part that checks to see if you have what it takes to make the cut as a hubber, even if all you will be an awful hubber. This is the anti robot test. If you can type in "abrading vidual," then that certifies you as a real person. It's good to know that HubPages is ready for a Terminator-like futuristic society where robots have taken over and write hubs. Once you complete this test after trying several times, then you are given a good effort award. Just kidding.

Step Three 1/2: Skip This Part

This is the "Help Us Learn More About You" page of setting up your account. If you want big brother to know your every move, go right ahead and fill it out. Many questions are raised in my mind such as who is "Us" and why do they want to learn more about me. If you are smart just click the "Skip This Step" button.

Guess what to do next

I'll give you one guess of what to do next. Hint: it's green.
I'll give you one guess of what to do next. Hint: it's green.

Step Four: Congratulations! You Did It

You have fingers to click a mouse. You have a name. You have an e-mail address. And you passed your HupPages entrance exam. You are an official hubber and you are ready to publish your propaganda to the masses. It's all green lights from here. Go, go, go!

Titles Are Important

Choosing your hub's name is like choosing the name of your child. Don't give it a boy name if it's a girl hub, unless it's one of those names that goes both ways like "Pat."
Choosing your hub's name is like choosing the name of your child. Don't give it a boy name if it's a girl hub, unless it's one of those names that goes both ways like "Pat."

Step Five: Choose A Title For Your Hub

Choosing a title for you hub is probably the most important decision you will make in your life. Just kidding, but it might be the most important decision of your hub's life. As with your username, it is worth the extra 2 seconds to think about what you are about the title your hub.

Take HubPages advice and be accurate unless you are trying to be funny. Even then only be funny every once in a while. It gets old when people keep promising one thing and delivering a hub on something entirely different. You will find many hubs about becoming rich beyond your wildest dreams, but non of them have delivered results for me yet.

Choosing Your Keywords

Not all of the suggested keywords will work well
Not all of the suggested keywords will work well

Step Six: Choose a Layout and Some Keywords

I usually choose the third layout option to get me started, unless I have another hub that I want to copy. Since it is your first hub, you should choose the third one like I did.

Choose some keywords that describe your hub.  Be as specific as possible, but you don't have to include every phrase you can think of.  Use Google Adwords keyword tool to target the right keywords to get more traffic.

Step Seven: Click Continue

This page is not important at all. Don't pay any attention to it, especially if you don't mind being banned from HubPages. Make sure you read over this page to make sure you are following HubPages rules. The rules aren't really that strict, so just check yourself before putting your hard work into writing your Spanish, copied, adult oriented, misleading, unfinished, spam hub about gambling. It won't make it even a day. Save yourself the trouble. Otherwise click the continue button and keep moving.

This Is Your Friendly HubPages Warning

In other words, my Spanish, copied, adult oriented, misleading, unfinished, spam hub about gambling isn't welcome on HubPages? Dang!

Typing In Your Subtitle And Editing Text

Some people might think they need to use Word to use a spell check, but HubPages built that in. Look for the ABC button that will underline misspellings in red and even give you suggestions. Ironically the word "HubPages" is always identified as a

Step Eight: Choose A Subtitle For Your Text Capsule

Choosing the subtitle of your hub is an important part of creating your hub. This subtitle lets the reader know what this section of text will contain. It is like headings in a Bible. It lets the reader quickly skim to the most relevant parts of your hub.

Subtitles should be more specific than the title of the entire hub. Subtitles that are most effective will use keywords that are well searched and allow the reader to see what's coming.

Just like your hub title, you should pick an accurate, specific, and useful subtopic title. It is not cool to title your subtitle, "Best Mp3 Players For Running" but then your text is about some ebook you are trying to sell. A little keyword variation is o.k. though.

Finished Capsule

This is what your text capsule should look like when you are finished. You have a subtitle and text. Notice I added hyperlinks to HubPages pages. This is convenient for people to go directly to other sources straight from your text.

Step Nine: Add More Capsules

Currently there are 13 types of capsules to add to your hubs. Some are neccessary, some enhance your hub, and others can make you money. Make sure that you add at least a few text capsules and a picture or two at minimum. Video capsules help enhance audiovisual learning. RSS feeds include news stories that may be relevant. Links capsules allow you to list links that may include further reading on the topic of your hub, and can also serve as a way to cite your sources.

Publish Your Hub

If you have not saved your hub first, you have the option to save before publishing. Because I have saved my hub, all I need to do is click "Publish Now"
If you have not saved your hub first, you have the option to save before publishing. Because I have saved my hub, all I need to do is click "Publish Now"

Step Ten: Scroll Up And Hit The Publish Button

As you add capsules and write more text, you will find yourself getting closer to the bottom of the page. In order to save or publish your hub, you will need to scroll back up to the top of the page. There you will find the appropriate options. You can save your unpublished hub, or publish it now. Done editing means you are saving your hub the way it is.

If you decide to save your hub without publishing it, you will be able to view it and see if you like it first. Then to publish it, you will have to hit the edit button at the top to get back in edit mode, then you can publish the hub.

Once you publish the hub you should see the congratulations page, and you are ready to create another hub. Congratulations on creating a hub. You are now no longer a HubPages dummy.

Step Eleven: Keep Learning More

There are many hubs dedicated to making your hubs even better. You can search improve your hubs and find many of these hubs. I am including some helpful videos and links below to get you headed in the right direction. Don't despair if you can't figure everything out in your first day.

HubPages has so many tools and options that it would be unreasonable to try to learn how to master everything all at once. Creating HubPages is like playing a strategy game. You make a move re-evaluate the situation and make a new move. Your new moves will be new hubs or editing your old hubs to perform better. You will become better the more you read and learn. Your Hub creation skills will be honed. Good luck hubbing. Don't forget to check out the links below.

Thanks for the step by step guide, this will be really helpful to the thousands of newbies who find out how great creating hubs on hubpages really is. The key is to write on a evergreen topic that is being searched for on the search engine. Great video, Way to go!

Storytellersrus,

I can't believe you didn't know about keyword researching prior to writing. You usually have a really high hubber score. I guess maybe you are more writer and deep thinker than computer nerd or money hungry. You could easily still tweak your titles and start earning more. good luck

Research Analyst,

Good points. I always try to write evergreen. I am glad you enjoyed the video. Ryan Hupfer is the one who both invited me to HubPages and explained the basics. He is a good guy and he works for HubPages, so he is a good reliable source.

Great hubs.. I'm new in Hubpages.. Your hubs give me a lot of information..

Just ask, I have no idea about how to make the many text-image format except by choosing the layout at the "step six"..

Thanks for sharing..

ChennyLie,

You can add images several ways. Step 9 will make the image capsule appear. Then you position the capsule the way you want it by using the little arrows in the upper right of the capsule. You can move it up and down, and you can make it right justified, so you have the image next to text.

Chances are, you aren't alone. I remember having some trouble with this when I first started, and there were less capsules available at that time.

A great review for me Blake. I used to use googles keyword tool more, but for the past six months I've just been writing whatever. My earnings have been lousy, only one payout from google in just over a year. Guess I'll need to study more from the U of Flannery.
